
The Police Cadet program is designed for college students who are interested in a law enforcement career. Working as a Police Cadet, students will gain hands-on experience while being exposed to the day-to-day operations of a police organization.
While working in an administrative capacity, cadets are assigned to the WPD Headquarters, Investigative Services Section and the Professional Development Unit. Cadets are part-time employees with a flexible work schedule to accommodate their school schedule.
Other benefits of the position include:
- Tuition reimbursement of up to $1000 per fiscal year
- Salary of $9.00 per hour
- Uniforms provided by WPD
- Employer contribution of 4.5% to 401k or 457 plan
- Police Cadets must participate in the NC Retirement System with a 6% mandatory contribution
Upon completion of their degree, cadets are eligible for the Cadet II position. The Cadet II position is full-time and includes an increased salary and all police officer benefits. The Police Cadet II position is highly considered for a spot in the next WPD training academy.
Minimum requirements:
- 18-25 years of age
- Possess or be eligible to obtain a NC driver's license
- U.S. Citizen
- Full-time student (Currently)
- Enrolled in a terminal degree program (AA/BA/BS) at an accredited college/university
Police Cadet Application Process
- Step One: Completion of the Wilmington Police Department employment application packet
- Step Two: Preliminary background check (driver's history, criminal history, AOC, credit history)
- Step Three: Interview board
- Step Four: Medical examination and drug screen
