Application Process

Police Officer Application Process:

The following steps must be completed in order to be considered for employment by the Wilmington Police Department. Please read our Employment Disqualifiers before applying.
  1. Driving History Inquiry Waiver
  2. Criminal History Inquiry Wavier
  3. Personal History F-3 Form
    Also include a copy of your Driver's license, social security card, birth certificate, and BLET Certification (if applicable).





After Steps 1-7 have been completed:

After your application packet has been submitted to the City of Wilmington Human Resources Department, they are screened and forwarded to the Wilmington Police Department Professional Development Unit for review. In order to be selected for an interview, you must complete the following additional steps:

  • Written Test and Job Related Physical Abilities Test*

* Applicants will be given a written, multiple-choice test, and must achieve an average score of at least 70% to continue in the hiring process.

* The physical abilities test must be completed in 7 minutes, 20 seconds or less to continue on in the hiring process. Applicants will be given ONLY ONE attempt to pass the test.  Failure will result in removal from the hiring process.

The test includes:
  • Run 200 yards
  • Step up on a step box 20 times
  • 15 Push Ups
  • 15 Sit Ups
  • Step up on a step box 20 times
  • 15 Push Ups
  • 15 Sit Ups 
  • Run 200 yards
  • If the applicant successfully passes the written and physical tests, then they must complete an online "brains assessment" (instructions will be given by WPD recruiter)
  • Upon completion of the assessment, they will be given an oral interview board.
  • If the applicant successfully passes the oral interview board, then they must successfully pass a thorough background check.

If a conditional job offer has been given:
The following steps must be completed
  • Medical/drug screening
  • Polygraph
  • Psychological evaluation
