The Wilmington Police Department will offer FREE Informational Sessions for 2016 concerning the application process.  

Please feel free to attend one of the sessions listed below.  ALL sessions will be held at WPD Headquarters at 615 Bess Street.

Application Process

POLICE OFFICER

Police Officer Job Requirements: 

  • 20 years of age
  • Valid driver's license
  • U.S. citizenship
  • High school diploma or GED

Police Officer Application Process:

The following steps must be completed in order to be considered for employment by the Wilmington Police Department. Please read our Employment Disqualifiers before applying.


Step 1 - Complete the online City Of Wilmington Application. 

Include the following forms in your application. 

*Note you will be prompted to attach forms at the end of your online application.

Step 2 - Preliminary Background Check - To be complete by WPD Recruiter. 

Step 3 - Written Test and Physical Assessment.

* Applicants will be given a written, multiple-choice test, and must achieve an average score of at least 70% to continue in the hiring process.

* The physical assessment must be completed in 7 minutes, 20 seconds or less to continue the hiring process. Applicants will be given only ONE attempt to pass the assessment. Failure will result in removal from the hiring process.

Assessment includes:

  • 200-yard run 
  • Step up on a step box 20 times
  • 15 push ups
  • 15 sit ups
  • Step up on a step box 20 times
  • 15 push ups
  • 15 sit ups 
  • 200-yard run

 

Step 4 - Online BRAINS assessment and oral interview panel.
  • BRAINS assessment to be provided by WPD Recruiter.
  • Applicants will then be assessed in a formal interview with senior department officials. 
Step 5 - Full background investigation


Step 6 - Interview with WPD Chief and/or Deputy Chiefs.


If a conditional job offer is given, applicants must complete and pass a medial and drug screening, a polygraph examination and a psychological evaluation.

CADET PROGRAM

The Cadet program is a recruitment tool used to expose interested citizens to the law enforcement profession, in the hopes the student will pursue a career at the Wilmington Police Department. Working as a Police Cadet, students will gain hands-on experience while being exposed to the day-to-day operations of a police organization.

While working in an administrative capacity cadets are assigned to the front desk, criminal investigations division, the professional development unit, and the property and evidence division. Cadets are part-time employees with a flexible work schedule to accommodate their school schedule.

Other benefits of the position include:

  • Eligibility for tuition reimbursement of up to $1,000 per fiscal year
  • Salary of $9.00 per hour
  • Uniforms provided by WPD
  • Employer contribution of 4.5% to 401k or 457 plan
  • Police Cadets must participate in the NC Retirement System with a 6% mandatory contribution

Minimum requirements:

  • 18-25 years of age
  • Possess or be eligible to obtain a NC driver's license
  • U.S. Citizen
Hiring Process

Police Cadet Position

The following steps must be completed in order to be considered for employment by the Wilmington Police Department

After an application packet is submitted to the City of Wilmington Human Resources Department they are screened and forwarded to the Wilmington Police Department Professional Development Unit for review.

The following steps will be completed only after a conditional job offer has been given.

  • Preliminary background check (driver's history, criminal history, AOC, credit history)
  • Medical examination
  • Drug screen
