Yard waste is collected once a week on the same day as your trash collection as part of your regular service at no additional charge.  Place yard waste neatly in the right-of-way (sidewalk or curb). Loose yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, pinecones, straw and vines must be containerized. The following are additional requirements for yard waste collection:

• Limbs may be no longer than 4 feet and no larger in diameter than 6 inches. 
• All loose yard wastes (grass clippings, pine straw, vines, pinecones and leaves) must be containerized. A container may be a plastic bag, a box or a personal 30 gallon trash can. Do not use the city-provided trash cart or wheelbarrows.
• Yard waste is collected on the same day as regular trash. Have your items in the right-of-way for collection no later than 7:30 a.m. on the day of collection.
• Large piles of debris will be flagged and put on a waiting list for pickup.
• Please do not mix non-organic items (roofing tiles, scrap lumber, rocks, etc.) with your yard waste.

 Please be patent with us in times when storms generate large volumes of debris.

Bulky items, such as appliances and furniture, are collected at no additional charge as part of your regular trash service by appointment only. Call the Office of Solid Waste Management at 910.341.7875 to schedule an appointment. Items should be placed in the right of way only after an appointment is made. 

Bulky items, yard waste and metal items must be placed neatly in separate piles on the right-of-way for pick up. Three different trucks service these items.

For the safety of our work crews, plase bend or remove nails from lumber.

Household waste which will not fit in a full trash cart is NOT a bulky item. These extra items must be placed in a bag or box and have an extra trash sticker attached before they will be collected. To purchase extra trash stickers, call the Office of Solid Waste Management at 910.341.7875.

Due to State regulations:

• The City can no longer pick up tires. Customers may deliver up to 5 tires to the New Hanover County landfill for disposal at no charge.
• The City can no longer pick up computers or TV’s.  Residents may take TV’s and computers to the NHC Landfill for free disposal between 9:00 and 2:00 on Wednesdays.  You will be allowed to recycle up to four items, per week, at no cost. 

Note:  Demolition materials from contracted work should not be put out for City collection. Removal of these materials is the responsibility of the contractor.  Call the New Hanover County Landfill  910.798.4450 for questions on disposal options. 

Do you have construction materials, furniture, housewares or toys that are still in good condition? If yes, please consider donating to the Habitat Home Store located at 1515 S. Front Street; 910.762.4744. 

Bicycles that are still in good condition can be refurbished for charitable resdistribution by contacting the Two-Wheeler Dealer at 4408 Wrightsville Avenue; 910.799.6444. 

In addition to the collection of trash, crews also provide daily litter pick up, alley maintenance, bag delivery, street sweeping, emptying public trash receptacles in the City’s parks and on City streets and code enforcement. City crews collected 82 tons of trash from over 250 brick trash receptacles in the Central Business District and City parks during fiscal year 2007-2008. 

The Special Services Section also provides carrion service to veterinary offices, commercial seafood establishments and City streets.  Over 79 tons of trash was collected from this service during fiscal year 2006-2007.
