In addition to providing more options to the customer, this change will save the city over $220,000 per year since recycling will only be collected every two weeks. It is also anticipated that 15-20% of recyclable materials will be diverted from the landfill. 

 

What can I recycle?

The City’s recycling program is a voluntary curbside collection program. Recycling is provided as part of your trash collection, at no additional charge. To sign up, call 910.341.7875.

Recycling is collected is on the same day as trash pick up. Items that can be recycled include:

  • tin food cans
  • glass bottles and jars
  • aluminum beverage containers
  • newspaper
  • plastic containers identified with
    #1 - #7 on the container's bottom
  • magazines
 
   
  • computer paper
  • cardboard boxes (flatten first)
  • cereal and food boxes
  • phone books with soft covers
  • brochures, junk mail, paper bags
  • catalogues (less than 2 inches thick)
  • file folders

Recycling tips
  • Recycling is collected on the same day as your trash. 
  • Place your recycling bin in the right-of-way by 7:30 a.m. and remove it as soon as possible once it has been emptied.
  • Do not put anything in your recycling bin that is not recyclable.
  • Remove tops and lids from bottles, jars and plastic containers and rinse out the items before placing them in your recycling bin.

Residents who are not offered curbside recycling may use the recycling drop-off centers located throughout the county. For location information, visit the New Hanover County Department of Environmental Management webpage or call 910.798.4400.

eRecycling
Non-working electronic items can be recycled free of charge every Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the New Hanover County landfill. The landfill is located at 5210 Highway 421 North. County residents will be allowed to recycle up to four items per week. Accepted items include computers, televisions and cell phones.

This program is for residents of New Hanover County only. Businesses and non-profit organizations will not be able to recycle electronics through this program.
