Recycling

The City’s recycling program, Separate Materials and Recycle Together (SMART) is a voluntary program for collecting recyclable items at curbside. Recycling is provided as part of your trash collection, at no additional charge. To sign up, call 910.341.7875 and a SMART box will be delivered to you at no additional charge.

Recycling collection is on the same day as trash pick up. Items that can be recycled include:

  • tin food cans
  • glass bottles and jars
  • aluminum beverage containers
  • newspaper
  • plastic containers identified with #1 - #7 on the container's bottom
  • magazines
  • white, colored, and computer paper
  • cardboard boxes (must flatten first)
  • cereal and food boxes
  • phone books with soft covers
  • brochures, junk mail, paper bags
  • catalogues (less than 2 inches thick)
  • file folders

Recycling Tips

  • Recycling is collected on the same day as your trash. Place your SMART box in the right-of-way by 7:30 a.m. and remove it as soon as possible once it has been emptied.
  • Please do not put anything in your SMART recycling box that is not recyclable.
  • Remove tops and lids from bottles, jars and plastic containers and rinse out the items before placing them in your SMART recycling box.

Residents who are not offered curbside recycling may use the recycling drop-off centers located throughout the county. For location information, visit the New Hanover County Department of Environmental Management webpage or call 910.798.4400.
