Fire in the Pines

The FIRE IN THE PINES’ FESTIVAL is a family friendly, environmental education festival organized by The Nature Conservancy,  the City of Wilmington, and the North Carolina Forest Service. Our intention is to create a fun-filled day in the park for families to  learn about the importance of fire to the native plants, animals, and ecosystems of our region, while promoting understanding and engendering support for why forests need regular controlled burns.  

Here's a sample of exciting features at the ‘Fire in the Pines’ Festival:

  • Smokey the Bear
  • NC Forest Service Firefighting Equipment, including their Helicopter
  • Live Birds of Prey, Reptiles, & Snakes
  • Hay rides, Scavenger Hunts, Raffle Prizes
  • Carnivorous Plants exhibit
  • Hands-on activities with over 40 environmental and youth organizations
  • Colorful Arts & Crafts, Face painting, fun activities
  • Live music & Family entertainment, Variety of Food trucks
  • GRAND FINALE - CONTROLLED BURN by the NC Forest Service (weather permitting)
