Council meeting, Apr. 18

Post Date:04/19/2017 10:00 AM

Tuesday, Apr. 18, City Council meeting, 6:30 p.m., City Hall
Items of interest on the agenda include:

  • APPROVED. Action on a policy that guides where bicycle racks can be placed in city rights-of-way. Additional bike/pedestrian access was ranked as a top priority during public input sessions for the recently adopted Comprehensive Plan, as well as the 2015 Citizen Survey.
  • APPROVED. Action on a $3.4 million contract for KMD Construction Corp. of Salisbury to build the new Shipyard Boulevard Fire Station. Construction of the new station is the final step of a plan that reduces the number of city fire stations from 11 to nine. In 2015, the new Station 3 opened on Cinema Drive, replacing the former Station 3 located at 3933 Princess Place Drive and Station 4 located at 310 Wallace Ave. The new stations are strategically located to provide the citizens of Wilmington with the same level of service currently provided while also updating aging facilities in stations that can accommodate today’s larger fire trucks. This new 11,500-square foot station will replace Station No. 5 (Wellington Avenue) and Station No. 6 (Carolina Beach Road). Construction on the new Station 5 is expected to begin in June and take approximately one year to complete.
  • APPROVED. Action on an agreement with the developer of two restaurants along the Riverwalk in northern downtown. The action would modify an existing development agreement that stipulates the developer build new public restrooms prior to opening the restaurants. The new agreement would allow the developer to provide temporary public restrooms and also stipulates that, until the temporary facilities are open, the restaurants must provide public access to their bathrooms. The developer would still be required to provide permanent public restrooms within three years as future development occurs on the site.
