The Wilmington Police Department will honor its Mounted Patrol and K9 units during a special celebration next Friday.

The ceremony will begin 2 p.m., Friday March 22 at WPD Headquarters. The public and media are encouraged to attend.

The founders of each unit, Retired Ofc. John Winecoff (Mounted) and Retired Capt. Bruce Hickman (K9) will deliver a brief history of the programs. WPD will also recognize all the Mounted riders and K9 handlers who have served and those who have passed. The ceremony will conclude with a demonstration by each unit.

The Mounted Patrol began operations in December 1988. The K9 unit got its start a few years before in early 1982. For more than three decades, these units have served the City of Wilmington, its residents and its visitors tirelessly. Join us as we celebrate their hard work and dedication!
