WFD internationally accredited

Post Date:03/28/2019 11:38 AM
Fire accreditationIn March of 2014, the Wilmington Fire Department became an internationally accredited department with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI).  There are currently 266 accredited departments in the world, and there are an estimated 30,000 fire departments in the United States.

To maintain this certification, the department has submitted annual compliance reports that show that we are maintaining or improving on performances that were verified and validated during the accreditation process five (5) years ago. In addition to the ACR’s, accredited departments are required to go through the accreditation process every five (5) years. For the past 6 to 8 months we have been preparing and undertaking this process. CFAI appoints a team of four (4) fire professionals that are certified peer assessors for CFAI to review the documentation. Once the team is satisfied with the submitted documentation, a site visit is scheduled for the team for the purpose of verifying and validating that all submitted documents was an accurate reflection of the department. At the close of the visit, the team will formally make a recommendation to the commission whether to approve, defer or denial. The team visited Wilmington on December 17th-21st, 2018 and determined that the department met or exceeded all applicable performance criteria and recommended the department for approval of continued accreditation status.  Agencies recommended must appear before the commission in order to address in person any questions, comments and defend their respective documents and data. The Commission convened in Orange County, California on March 12th -14th. Wilmington appeared on Wednesday the 13th and the Commission voted unanimously to award the department “accredited” status.

Fire Chief Buddy Martinette stated, “I am very proud of our department for this achievement.  It is a testament to the professionalism of each man and women that puts on the Wilmington Fire Department uniform and the commitment of City Council to support our efforts.  The accomplishment to be an accredited fire department demonstrates our on-going commitment to providing the highest quality of service to our citizens through a documented process of continuous improvement.”
