Coast Guard Bulkhead/Riverfront Park Work Begins
The contractor performing long-planned bulkhead repairs for the US Coast Guard in the Riverfront Park/Diligence area has begun preliminary work. The bulkhead is like an underground retaining wall that supports the Riverwalk and street and the area that is next to Riverfront Park is owned by the Coast Guard.
Construction will get underway in the coming days and expected to be completed in about a year. The initial phase of work will take place in Riverfront Park in front of the Federal Courthouse and will eventually move north toward Princess Street and the Diligence area.
Much of Riverfront Park is closed for this project, but Water Street will remain open with the occasional temporary closure. Vehicular and pedestrian access will continue to flow freely in front of the Federal courthouse where the work is taking place. When this work is complete next summer, the city will begin the next phase of Riverfront Park improvements which will involve re-installing the brick street, an event plaza, a decorative fountain, landscaping and other park amenities similar to what is now at the foot of Market Street.
