On Tuesday, June 25th, at 6:30 p.m., the Wilmington Fire Department will hold a Memorial DedicationLacewell_Eric_photo_resized Ceremony for the late Captain Eric Lacewell. This ceremony will take place in the Wilmington Fallen Firefighter Memorial, located at the Empie Park Fire Station #2, 3403 Park Avenue. During the dedication ceremony and in his honor, Captain Eric D. Lacewell’s bronzed fire helmet and boots will be unveiled and Captain Lacewell’s family presented with a flag and badge from the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation.

Captain Lacewell began his career as a firefighter with the Wilmington Fire Department in 1987, when he was 24 years old, and worked his way up the ranks from engineer to captain. Captain Lacewell epitomized the Brotherhood within the fire service. His selfless community service and enthusiastic personality positively influenced those around him. During his career with the Wilmington Fire Department, Eric also served as President to the Wilmington Chapter of the Professional Black Firefighters Association and head of United Way in Wilmington, North Carolina. On March 31st, 2011, while on duty, Captain Lacewell sustained a catastrophic injury that led to him being a quadriplegic. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries a few years later and passed away on November 4th, 2014, at the young age of 51 years. Captain Eric D. Lacewell, also known as “Smiley” by his co-workers and friends, proudly served in the Wilmington Fire Department for 24 years.

“Captain Eric Lacewell was a very special person among our workforce,” states Wilmington Fire Chief C.V. “Buddy” Martinette. “Eric was never without a smile or a kind word, even after his injury. He proved to inspire each of us in not just how to live our lives while healthy and active but also how to gracefully and with dignity complete life’s journey while injured and paralyzed. The men and women of the Wilmington Fire Department are honored to recognize Eric by placing his bronze boots at our fire department line of duty death memorial.”
