2019 Year End Crime Review Released
Interim Chief Donny Williams presented the 2019 Year End Crime Review to members of the Wilmington City Council Monday, February 17.
Here are the highlights of his presentation:
Rape is down 31.1 percent. Robbery is down 11.4 percent.
While there was no change in the homicide rate between 2018 and 2019, violent crime as a whole decreased 6.1 percent. WPD also maintained a 78 percent clearance rate for homicides in 2018 and 2019 — 15 points higher than the national average.
Burglaries decreased by 21.9 percent while larcenies, motor vehicle theft and arson increased. Property crime as a whole decreased by 0.1 percent.
The year saw a dramatic increase in Shotspotter Activations (400 in 2018 to 639 in 2019).
Chief Williams and staff are working to discover the root cause of this increase and develop a strategy for addressing the problem in 2020.
It’s important to note that 113 of those alerts were possible fireworks/firecrackers.
