City Council budget Work Session slated for March 27

Post Date:03/26/2020

City Council will hold a day-long budget worksession this Friday, March 27 to address and discuss priorities for next years’ budget. State statute requires the city to approve a budget for fiscal year 2020-2021 no later than June 30. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, this process must move forward and we have made arrangements to be compliant with the restrictions and guidelines currently in place. (see below for details)

On Friday, in addition to planning for the budget, city council will consider a resolution authorizing the city manager to implement policies necessary to comply with recent laws put into place at the Federal level in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Federal legislation to be addressed includes the Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act, which provides a time-limited expansion of job-protection benefits under FMLA. Also addressed in the proposed resolution is the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act allows for paid sick leave to employees in certain situations due to COVID-19.  If approved, this will be in addition to the advanced leave policy approved by Council last week.

Meeting Logistics:

  • This meeting is open to the public. The ballroom of the convention center has been partitioned into several rooms to allow this meeting to take place with no more than ten people per room, consistent with the current state of emergency
  • Some Council members will be participating remotely via videoconference
  • Only staff who are needed to participate will be present. Others will watch the webcast.
  • The meeting will be televised live on GTV8 and streamed live at www.wilmingtonnc.gov/gtv
  • We encourage the public to watch the proceedings online or on tv rather than attend in person.
  • For those that choose to attend, parking is available in the Convention Center Parking Deck or on Nutt Street.
