City to request Court to release video of remarks made by former WPD officers that led to their termination

Post Date:06/30/2020

On Tuesday, June 30 at  10 a.m., per N.C. Gen. Stat. 132-1.4A, the City will file a request that the New Hanover County Superior Court review a law enforcement recording and determine whether the recording should be released to the public. The recording contains two conversations between former police officers Michael Piner, Jesse Moore, II, and James Gilmore. While written portions of the conversations were released by the City last week, no video or audio has been approved for release by the Court. The recording was the subject of an Internal Affairs Investigation, and the City is respectfully asking that the Court consider the standards in N.C. Gen. Stat 132-1.4A(g) in making a decision on whether to release the audio/video recordings or not. The Court will set the hearing date. More information about this incident, including the materials that were initially approved for release by the Court, are available here.
