Be a Super Scooper!

Person with a small dog scooping pet waste.
Did you know there are an estimated 55,000 dogs in New Hanover County and that they produce 21 tons of pet waste every day?

This is an important stat to remember because, when left behind, pet waste spreads harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses to pets, people, and local waterways. Bacteria in waterways can cause infections and gastrointestinal illness, often leading to swimming advisories and shellfish harvesting closures. The good news is that pet waste is one source of bacteria that we can control.

Help keep harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites out of our waterways with these Super Scooper tips:

Carry extra pet waste bags on walks so you're prepared no matter how many times you stop.

This not only prevents pollution, but it's also the law on public property - not carrying pet waste bags on public property in the City of Wilmington can land you a $250 fine.

Leave no trace by not leaving pet waste bags behind.

There's no Poop Fairy that cleans up pet waste bags left on the side of a trail or path - they just end up becoming litter. After taking the step to use a pet waste bag, please also carry it out until it can be thrown away. We know it's not always pleasant to carry, but tying it onto your pet's leash or harness or bringing a special container to hold it in are some ways to make the trip a little easier.

Clean up pet waste on public AND private property.

Remember, stormwater runoff doesn't follow property boundaries, so pet waste that's left behind on private properties can still be washed into local waterways. While there's no ordinance requiring it, please still consider cleaning up pet waste at home to protect downstream neighbors and waterways.

Help protect your health, your pets' health, and the health of our waterways by scooping the poop. To those already following these tips, we see you and thank you for being Super Scoopers!
