Projects

Capital projects in the City of Wilmington are designed with the bigger picture in mind. We invest in infrastructure that supports daily life, such as streets, trails, drainage systems, recreation spaces, and public safety facilities. But every project also plays a role in advancing larger community goals. A sidewalk may also improve accessibility and connect neighborhoods. A roadway project may also improve drainage and pedestrian safety. A fire station supports thoughtful growth and reduces response times citywide. By aligning capital investments across departments, the City ensures that individual projects reinforce one another to strengthen safety, mobility, quality of life, and long-term resilience. This coordinated approach creates a connected network of improvements that will make Wilmington safer and more resilient for years to come.

Strategic Plan

Acting as a roadmap to guide the city’s work, the City's five-year strategic plan focuses on five key areas: Housing and Neighborhoods, Transportation and Infrastructure, Safety, Organizational Excellence, and Economic Development and Cultural Vibrancy.

Transportation Bond Projects

City of Wilmington voters approved a $44-million referendum in 2014 to support citywide transportation projects. Leveraged with additional local funds, the city has allocated more than $55 million to dozens of street, sidewalk and trail related projects over the last decade.

Vision Zero

In September 2025, the City of Wilmington adopted Vision Zero, an international strategy that uses a safe systems approach to prevent fatal and severe crashes. The City’s goal is to eliminate all traffic deaths and severe injuries by 2036.
