Celebrate Wetlands on February 2 for World Wetlands Day!
Published on January 27, 2026
Estuary, marsh, bog... wetlands go by many names, but we think they're all equally wonderful! With World Wetlands Day just around the corner, it's the perfect time to celebrate what makes them special.
Wetlands live up to their name – they’re areas of land that have unique traits because of the presence of water. Sometimes the water is visible, and other times you don’t notice it unless you feel a squish when you step. These unique features influence the wildlife and plants you’ll find. Since no two wetlands are exactly the same, they are among some of the most biodiverse habitats on Earth.
World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on February 2, recognizes and honors the importance of these special ecosystems. They offer vital environmental, economic, and cultural benefits and have shaped the development of many regions over time. With the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean nearby, our area features a variety of wetlands for us to explore and enjoy.
If you’re looking for a place to celebrate World Wetlands Day, James E.L. Wade Park is a great option (located at 3500 Bethel Road, Wilmington, NC 28409). It features a 12-acre constructed wetland that filters stormwater runoff from 590 acres in the Hewletts Creek Watershed. Not only does this wetland help improve water quality, but it also serves as a community park and a wildlife hotspot. And we think those are things worth celebrating. Have a wonderful World Wetlands Day!
