Keeping Wilmington Moving
For Larry Mims, a typical day often starts with potholes, but the work behind each repair is more involved than most people realize. Larry operates two primary vehicles used for pothole repairs: a patch truck equipped with automated systems that allow repairs to be completed quickly from inside the vehicle, and an on-call truck that requires more hands-on labor using cold patch and stone materials. Weather conditions and material availability often determine which equipment the team uses on a given day. On average, Larry fills approximately 40 potholes each day, helping improve roadway conditions across Wilmington.
Working Safely in Traffic
While pothole repairs may appear simple from the outside, Larry says the work requires constant focus and awareness. “You’re on the street 100% of the time,” he explained. “You have to be hypervigilant with traffic, especially if you are working in an intersection.” In addition to the physical work, Larry also tracks repair locations, materials used, and other data that help the City monitor service levels and costs. One thing Larry hopes residents understand is that patience helps keep crews safe while allowing repairs to happen efficiently. Working in active traffic areas every day requires constant awareness, and most pothole repairs take only a few minutes to complete before crews are back on the move helping improve roadway safety across Wilmington.
Improving Safety for Residents
Larry’s work helps reduce wear and tear on vehicles while making streets safer for both drivers and pedestrians. By repairing damaged pavement quickly, he helps prevent tire and alignment damage while also reducing the need for drivers to suddenly swerve around potholes, creating safer conditions for everyone on the road.
Proud of a Strong Safety Record
One accomplishment Larry is especially proud of is maintaining an excellent safety record throughout his career with the City. “I haven’t had any safety violations, and I’m in traffic 100% of the time,” he said. “That’s something I can be proud of.”
Life Outside of Work
Outside of work, Larry stays busy with his family. He is a proud father of four and grandfather of three. Two of his youngest children recently graduated from Appalachian State University, an accomplishment he says makes him especially proud. Larry is also a veteran, as is his oldest son.
Advice for Future City Employees
For anyone considering a career with the City, Larry encourages people to research positions that interest them and understand the qualifications needed to succeed. “You never know when there might be an opening,” he said. “Then if you get the job, give it 100%, because it will work out for you.”
