Kick off the summer with an exploration into the wonderful world of nature at night! Participants will learn about nocturnal animal adaptations along a hike in the nature preserve and finish with a campfire and Smore's.

Let the chorus of katydids, cicadas, frogs and owls carry you into the quiet wonder of a summer night at Halyburton Park.

Snakes of NC: July 2, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Discover the fascinating world of snakes that call North Carolina home in this engaging nature program at the preserve. Snakes of North Carolina explores the diversity, behavior, and ecological importance of these often-misunderstood reptiles that live in forests, wetlands, fields, and even near our own backyards.

Wildlife Detectives: July 16, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

When the sun goes down, a whole new world of wildlife begins to stir in the park. Participants are invited to become nature investigators and uncover the secret lives of mammals that are most active after dark.

Bats: July 23, 2026 from 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

As twilight settles over the preserve, one of nature’s most fascinating nighttime creatures takes to the sky. This program explores the mysterious world of bats and the incredible abilities that allow them to thrive after dark.

Moths: August 6, 2026: 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Discover the hidden beauty of moths at the nature preserve. As evening approaches, We’ll explore the fascinating world of these nighttime pollinators and learn how moths play an important role in healthy ecosystems. Participants will discover the unique colors, patterns, and adaptations that make moths so remarkable, and may even observe a few up close as they are attracted to light. Join us for a short adventure into the nighttime lives of these amazing insects!
