For nearly three decades, Chad Kraynick has played a hands-on role in keeping Wilmington’s streets safe and drivable. As a heavy equipment operator IV with the City’s Public Works Department, Streets Division, Chad’s work spans everything from paving and grading roads to crack sealing and repairing equipment when it breaks down. “A little bit of everything” is how Chad describes his day-to-day responsibilities. When an issue comes up in the field, he is often one of the people called upon to help solve it — whether that means operating heavy equipment, troubleshooting a problem or stepping in wherever help is needed.
Behind the Work on Wilmington’s Roads
While residents see the end result of Chad’s work in smoother roads, the process behind those improvements is often complex. Precise grading, equipment breakdowns and delays in materials such as asphalt can turn routine tasks into challenges that require patience and adaptability. Chad said the job relies heavily on teamwork and coordination with both coworkers and outside partners. That reliability has not gone unnoticed. Construction Supervisor Keith Keen described Chad as a dependable presence on the team. “He’s the kind of guy you want on your team,” Keith said. “He’s a good role model and an exemplary employee.”
A Project That Stands Out
Among the many projects Chad has worked on over the years, the downtown boat ramp stands out as a source of pride. The large-scale effort required coordination across multiple crews, including concrete and asphalt teams, and included paving the parking lot as part of the overall project. Chad has also experienced firsthand how much the community values the work done by the Streets Division. Over the years, residents have stopped to thank him and his crewmates while they were on the job, brought drinks to crews working in the heat and, on one occasion, surprised the team with pizza. Those gestures, he said, are small but meaningful reminders of the impact their work has on the community.
Beyond the Job
Outside of work, Chad enjoys spending time outdoors. He is an avid hunter and fisherman and particularly enjoys deer hunting in Pender County, a pastime that allows him to unwind after work.
Advice for Future City Employees
For those interested in working for the City of Wilmington, Chad keeps his advice simple: be patient, expect the unexpected and be willing to put in the time and hard work. After 27 years with Public Works, Chad said one of the most rewarding parts of the job is working alongside teammates who are always willing to help one another. That shared commitment, he said, is what helps the department continue serving residents effectively — one road, project and problem at a time.
