For Cynthia Holden, Volunteer Coordinator with Parks & Recreation, the power of community is built one connection at a time. After 27 years with the City, Cynthia has served in countless roles across the department. Today, she coordinates volunteers who support programs and facilities throughout Wilmington, matching each person with opportunities that fit their interests and strengths. From foster grandparents who mentor children at the Davis and MLK centers to students gaining workforce experience through community partnerships, Cynthia enjoys seeing volunteers of all ages make a difference.
Finding Her Calling
Over the past several years, Cynthia has helped grow Wilmington Parks & Recreation's volunteer program by connecting people with meaningful opportunities to serve. From coordinating background checks to matching volunteers with programs that fit their interests, she enjoys helping people find rewarding ways to give back while supporting parks, programs and facilities across the city. Since taking on the role, she's also helped navigate changes to volunteer policies and processes, ensuring volunteers have the resources they need to make a positive impact.
Bringing People Together
One of Cynthia’s favorite memories came during the creation of the Sherriedale Morgan mural at the Sherriedale Morgan Fitness Center. Over several months, residents, veterans and volunteers from across Wilmington came together to transform the space to honor Coach Sherriedale Morgan. Many participants had little or no artistic experience, but that didn't matter. "It was a lot of fun and a great way to meet new people," Cynthia said. Watching neighbors connect, share stories and build new friendships while working side by side reminded her that community projects create much more than physical improvements.
Every Helping Hand Matters
Volunteers play an important role in Parks & Recreation, providing extra support at facilities, assisting with programs and helping staff serve the community more effectively. Just as important are the lasting relationships they build. Over the years, Cynthia has watched volunteers become mentors, role models and familiar faces for generations of children participating in Parks & Recreation programs. "They have a huge part in what we do," she said.
The Power of Community
When asked what this year's Parks & Recreation Month theme means to her, Cynthia's answer was simple. "It's about being present," she said. "Being able to see what needs to be done and being helpful." That mindset is what Cynthia loves most about her work. Because she has experience across so many programs and facilities, she's able to connect residents with opportunities throughout Wilmington Parks & Recreation, helping families discover new places, programs and experiences. No two days are ever the same, and that's exactly how she likes it.
