For Dan "Coach" Bloodworth, Recreation Coordinator at the MLK Community Center, the power of safe spaces is about much more than a building. It's about creating an environment where every young person feels welcomed, supported and encouraged to succeed.
More Than a Coach
While Coach helps oversee daily activities at the MLK Community Center, his impact extends far beyond recreation programming. For many of the young people who visit the center, he's a trusted mentor and positive role model. "Believe it or not, it's unwritten, but I'm like their uncle or male father figure," Coach said. "That's what keeps me going every day." Whether he's talking through challenges at school, offering advice or simply being someone kids know they can count on, Coach believes those everyday conversations can make a lasting difference.
Building Confidence On and Off the Field
Coach hopes every child who participates in Parks & Recreation programs leaves with one important lesson: "Have confidence in yourself. Don't let anyone steal your thunder." One of his proudest moments came after meeting a student through the MLK Community Center. After learning she competed in track and field, Coach began working with her to develop her skills. Today, she is a conference champion in multiple events, has competed on the national stage and is being recruited by several colleges. For Coach, her success represents more than athletic accomplishments. It's proof of what can happen when someone believes in a young person's potential.
The Power of Safe Spaces
Coach says the MLK Community Center is a place where every child is welcome. "We keep an open door here," he said. "Kids of all religions, genders, and races come here and feel welcome. They come because they feel safe and not judged." Whether youth are participating in sports, after-school programs or simply spending time at the center, Coach hopes they know they have a place where they belong. "When the kids come here laughing and joking, that's what it's all about," he said. For Coach, that's the true power of safe spaces.
