City of Wilmington Mulch Giveaway Program

The City of Wilmington is launching a mulch giveaway program to distribute excess wood chips generated from urban forestry operations to the general public. The events are scheduled for the last Friday of each month, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, until further notice. For more information, please contact the Parks and Forestry office at 910-341-7852.

Distribution Details:

• Mulch distribution will take place at the overflow parking lot behind Legion Stadium, accessible via West Lake Shore Drive, on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will be limited to hand loading only; no equipment will be permitted on-site. In addition to mulch, a limited supply of partially decayed stump grindings (a mixture of wood shavings and soil) will also be available, which is heavier and is also hand load only. Please note that no loading assistance will be provided, and commercial vehicles, including dump trucks and marked commercial trucks or trailers, are prohibited.

Traffic Guidelines:

• Traffic will enter from West Lake Shore Drive by right turn only, with vehicles queuing toward Stadium Drive if necessary. Parks and Recreation staff will be on-site to manage traffic and address questions.

Important Notes:

• This event is open to all area residents; City residency is not required. Staff reserve the right to suspend or stop the event at any time due to supply limitations or safety concerns. No guarantees are made regarding the quality or composition of the materials provided.
