City Offering Free Programs for National Homeownership Month

Thinking about buying a home? The City’s Housing Division is offering a full month of free resources, educational opportunities, and expert guidance to help community members navigate the path to homeownership.

Throughout June, residents can participate in virtual lunch & learn webinars, attend the Keys to Homeownership Expo, complete a free Homebuyer Education course, and schedule one-on-one mini housing counseling appointments with HUD-certified housing counselors.


Lunch & Learn Webinar Series

  • Every Tuesday and Thursday in June from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Join housing experts virtually during your lunch break to learn about important homebuying topics and participate in an open Q&A session.

Keys to Homeownership Expo

  • Saturday, June 13 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • MLK Center, 401 S. 8th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401
  • Residents are invited to attend this free community expo featuring trusted local vendors and organizations offering valuable homeownership resources and information.

Expo Features

  • Lenders and first-time homebuyer mortgage loan programs
  • Real estate brokers
  • Homeowners insurance agents
  • Home inspection and home safety specialists
  • Mobile paper shredding truck provided through grant funding from the N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol and the N.C. Department of Insurance’s SHIIP Division

Homebuyer Education Course

  • Friday, June 26, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Interested in pursuing a first-time homebuyer loan with the City? Take the first step by attending this free Homebuyer Education class led by HUD-certified housing counselors.

Participants will:

  • Earn a certificate valid for two years
  • Learn about the City’s HOP loan program
  • Gain valuable insight into the homebuying process

Mini Housing Counseling Appointments

  • Tuesday, June 30
  • Appointments available from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Need personalized guidance on a housing-related question? Residents can schedule free 30-minute mini housing counseling sessions with a HUD-certified housing counselor for individualized support and direction.
