Overview

The City of Wilmington is in the design and construction phase of the Greenville Loop Trail. The project has been split into four phases to expedite design and construction. 

The Greenville Loop Trail is part of the rapidly expanding network of multiuse trails being planned and constructed in the City of Wilmington. It will make a connection from the recently constructed Central College Trail at the intersection of South College Road and Holly Tree Road then head east along Holly Tree Road, Pine Grove Drive, Greenville Loop Road, and Greenville Avenue to the River to the Sea Bikeway at the intersection of Greenville Avenue and Park Avenue. The River To The Sea Bikeway runs from downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach.

The Greenville Loop Trail will cover approximately 4.4 miles providing connections between schools, parks, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods in the southeast quadrant of Wilmington. 

 

Timeline

The City completed construction on the South end (from College Road up to the intersection of Holly Tree Road and Pine Grove Drive) in 2023. Work on the North and Central portions is anticipated to begin in fall 2025. A bike and pedestrian crossing of College Road at Holly Tree has been completed and connects the Greenville Loop Trail to the existing Central College Trail.

 

Project benefits

  • Maximize use of public dollars by complementing and expanding upon existing trails
  • Help create safe connections for bicycling and walking between existing and planned trails
  • Provide healthy, safe option to get exercise
  • Provide walking/biking as another way to reach commercial areas, getting cars off congested roads
  • Address one of the top priorities identified from citizens in neighborhood meetings held around the city earlier this year as part of city’s effort to develop long-term plan for growth

Section 1

Section 1: Holly Tree Road from South College Road to Pine Grove Drive.

Project Schedule: Construction on this project was completed in 2023

*There will be a signalized crossing installed at South College Road so trail users can connect to the Central College Trail. This is a separate project, slated for spring 2024

Section 2

Section 2: From Pine Grove Drive to Old Military Road. Due to the bridge and road crossings included in this section, this section of trail will likely be the last to go to construction.

Project Schedule: Construction is estimated to begin on this nine-month project in fall 2025.

Section 3

Section 3: From Old Military Road to Park Avenue. Trail will be located on the north side of Greenville Loop Road through this section with a proposed signaled pedestrian crossing at Oleander Drive.

Section 4

Section 4: Trail runs from the intersection of Holly Tree Road and Pine Grove Drive to the planned roundabout at the Pine Grove Drive/Greenville Loop Road intersection. This section will be completed with the Pine Grove Drive South intersection improvements projects.

  • Begin construction: spring 2026 (duration approximately 14 months)
