The addition of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of River Road and Independence Boulevard will improve traffic flow and safety along this busy corridor. The $2.42 million project, which kicked off in July 2025 and is expected to wrap up in early 2026, is jointly funded by the City, Riverlights, and Proximity Watermark Development.

Project Features:

  • Single land roundabout
  • Pedestrian crossings
  • New sidewalk, curb, and gutter along Independence Boulevard from the roundabout to River Front Place

 

 

During Construction:

Southbound traffic on River Road is detoured to Carolina Beach Road through both Raleigh Street and Sunnyvale Drive. Traffic will be allowed to continue through the intersection tin the following ways:

  • Northbound traffic on River Road will be able to make a right on Independence Boulevard toward Carolina Beach Road
  • Southbound traffic on Independence Boulevard will be able to make a left to proceed south on River Road toward Riverlights
