Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Sponsorship

The Wilmington Police Department offers a "Sponsorship" for persons to attend the Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy at a local community college. The department works in conjunction with Cape Fear Community College and Brunswick Community College for the BLET program. Receiving a Sponsorship will defer the cost of the tuition for the course. Anyone seeking a Sponsorship must be in compliance with the WPD Sponsorship requirements(PDF, 152KB) . Request for Sponsorship must be submitted no later than 30 Days prior to the beginning of the course. Please keep in mind that this is NOT a paid position and does not constitute or guarantee employment with the Wilmington Police Department.


Compensation

For Trainees

Trainees will be paid $22.20/hour ($46,176/year) while they are in BLET. Upon graduating BLET and becoming sworn they will receive a 5% increase with a new salary of $22.26 or $48,615/year.

For Lateral Transfers

Lateral Transfers can receive a salary between $22.26 ($48,615) and $35.62 ($77,794) depending on their years of experience as a sworn police officer.
