The City of Wilmington appointed former Police Chief Ralph Evangelous to serve as Interim Chief beginning June 30th, 2025 while a nationwide search for the next permanent chief continues.
Chief Evangelous brings more than 50 years of law enforcement experience and a deep commitment to the Wilmington community. He led the Wilmington Police Department from 2004 to 2020 and has also served as an active reserve officer.
Deputy City Manager Thom Moton said Evangelous’ familiarity with the department and proven leadership will provide stability during this time of transition. “Chief Evangelous is a respected and experienced leader who understands both the department and the community it serves,” said Moton. “He’s well-positioned to provide steady guidance as we prepare to welcome Wilmington’s next chief of police.”
During his 16-year tenure as chief, Evangelous oversaw major departmental advancements, championed community engagement, and prioritized transparency and accountability. His return reflects the city’s commitment to consistent leadership and strong public safety.
