Riverfront Bulkhead Replacement Project

Overview

Since Wilmington’s inception, our downtown riverfront has served as a vital, working harbor. Because of this rich maritime history, much of our shoreline relies on engineered bulkheads rather than natural riverbanks to prevent erosion and support the vibrant activities along the water today. In recent years, the City has proactively repaired or replaced large sections of this critical infrastructure, including the area between Market and Princess Streets and behind the Coastline Inn.

Currently, our focus is on the 59-year-old metal bulkhead at the former site of the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence. Now owned by the City, this bulkhead has far outlived its expected lifespan, its integrity degraded by decades of rust, debris, and wave action. To secure this historic stretch of the river, the City plans to replace the failing metal bulkhead with a modern "relieving platform." This solution provides the same vital shoreline stabilization in a more environmentally friendly way than a traditional bulkhead.

Revitalizing this infrastructure is a major financial undertaking. To offset costs, the City is applying for a federal grant — and we need your help. Federal reviewers strongly consider community support when awarding these funds. We are asking residents and local organizations to show their support for this essential project by signing an electronic letter of support. Please click the link below to add your name.

Thank you for helping us protect and maintain Wilmington’s vibrant riverfront!
