Cultural Programs

In addition to our parks, trails, and indoor/outdoor recreation facilities, the City of Wilmington's Parks and Recreation Department offers a myriad of cultural programs that highlight what makes Wilmington such a vibrant city. Parks, by the beginning of the 20th century, began to be utilized for dance, theatre, and even film. Today, there is an astounding influx of artistic and cultural activity in parks. From large-scale festivals to long-term residencies with arts organizations and partners, our cultural programs strive to revitalize the role parks play in our lives. Check out our program opportunities below and join us!

Art Installation: Call for Proposals

The City of Wilmington, North Carolina, invites professional artists or artist teams to submit proposals for the design, fabrication, and installation of a permanent public artwork that commemorates Wilmington’s significant role in the American Revolution. To download the 'Call for Proposals' overview guide, click here.(PDF, 93KB)

Project Overview:

Wilmington played a critical role in the Revolutionary War, serving as a hub of resistance and patriotism in colonial North Carolina. In celebration of the country’s sesquicentennial anniversary, this public art piece will honor that legacy—recognizing the stories, people, and spirit that helped shape the birth of a nation.

The selected artwork will be installed on public property in downtown Wilmington, a vibrant and historic area that welcomes residents and visitors alike. The artwork should reflect the historical importance of Wilmington’s revolutionary past while creating a meaningful and lasting landmark for the city.

Budget:

The City will award $25,000 to the selected artist or artist team. This is a total, all-inclusive budget that must cover all costs related to design, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and any necessary permits or insurance.
