In addition, the Social Worker will respond to assist Juvenile detectives in connecting residents with the appropriate services. Schedule and conduct meetings with youth and their families to determine the need for diversionary plans and assessment. Deliver presentations to various City and professional groups regarding youth violence issues. Liaison between Department of Juvenile Justice and the Wilmington Police Department. Provide information to officers in Basic Law Enforcement Training classes and current patrol officers each year on juvenile issues.  Starting in 2024 the Social Worker is co-located at the Community Justice Center (inside Harrelson Center) along with SVU, DV detectives and other agencies.

Education and Outreach Programs

Diversion Programs for 1st Time Juvenile Offenders Ages 10 to 17 years old

The Juvenile Diversion Program has been established by the Wilmington Police Department to divert first-time juvenile offenders of misdemeanor crimes. The Department Social Worker will meet with the families to discuss concerns and options for the juvenile. The program is voluntary; however, each juvenile will be expected to abide by program rules and regulations. These are discussed during the intake appointment. If after 90 days the juvenile has failed (or is unwilling) to complete the diversion requirements, the case is sent to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Referral out to Community agencies and program

Cop Camp

The Wilmington Police Department has been running it’s cost free Cop Camp over 30 years. Cop camp is designed to provide children with an opportunity to positively interact with law enforcement personnel. We make every effort to reach a diverse group of children that really deserve this type of fun experience and give them an alternative to socializing on the streets during the summer. Throughout the five days of camp children participate in recreational activities, field trips, educational experiences, and a community service project. Children leave Cop Camp with a mentor, new friends, and a positive impression of their local police.

Turkey Give Away

The Wilmington Police Department and Pinnacle Storage team up each year and give away 100 Turkey meals to families in need in NHC.

Santa Cop

Santa Cop has been in existence for over 30 years at the Wilmington Police Department. Referrals are made based on determined criteria with priority going to those who have suffered from a parent/caregiver death, house fire, or significant family trauma. On “Santa Cop” day officers and civilians escort children and youth on a one-day shopping spree. The Santa Cop program is made possible by the generous donations of local individuals, businesses, and organizations.

Internet Safety classes and Seminars

The Department Social Worker along with fellow detectives utilize the NetSmartz presentations upon request. NetSmartz offers free, multimedia internet safety presentations tailored for specific audiences — parents and communities, teens, tweens, and younger children. The innovative presentations make use of online resources, videos, and expert tips to educate, engage, and empower children and adults to be safer on and offline.
