Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities.   Locally we provide year round training for 600+ athletes. This includes 14 different sports,  summer camps, special events and more.   All programs are offered to the athletes at no cost.

There are many to become involved with Special Olympics:

  • Volunteer
  • Coach
  • Donate (all donations are 100% tax deductible)


Fundraiser: The Annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 23, 2019.  Held at the Kure Beach Boardwalk.

Basketball Skills Day
March 27 at UNCW, 9-1pm – Registration required

Spring Games
Track and Field Day May 1st at Ashley High, 9:30- 2 pm– Registration required

Spring Dance
FREE Fun Spring Dance at Halyburton Park, TBA

Camp Shriver Summer Camp

Free summer day camp


Participants are required to attend all practices and have updated medical forms on file to be eligible to compete in the state level competition (June 2-4). To register for a sport, go to the weekly practice listed below to sign up with the coach.

Bowling: Cardinal Lanes training begins in March
Practices are held every Thursday from 3-5 pm
State Games: May 31 – June 2   Raleigh

Swimming: Swim practices are every Tuesday evening from 6:30 – 7:30 pm
Location: YWCA begins on February 5
Free Swim: from 7:30 - 8 pm
State Games: May 31 – June 2  Raleigh

Power Lifting: You must pre-register by calling 341-7253
Spring Sport State Games: May 31 – June 2 Raleigh

Softball practices are every Tuesday 6-7:30 pm 
Location: MLK Center, 401 S. 8th St.
Practice begins February 5

Gymnastics: Gymnastics practices are held every Friday at 6 pm

Volleyball: Volleyball practice will be held every Wednesday 6-7pm begins February
