Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities.   Locally we provide year round training for 600+ athletes. This includes 14 different sports,  summer camps, special events and more.   All programs are offered to the athletes at no cost.

There are many to become involved with Special Olympics:

articipants are required to attend all practices and have updated medical forms on file to be eligible to compete in the state level competition (June 2-4th). To register for a sport, go to the weekly practice listed below to sign up with the Coach.

State Games for Spring Sports:  June 1-3 Raleigh, NC

Bowling:        Cardinal Lanes training begins in Mid-March 
                           Competitive Practices are held every Thursday from 3-5 p.m.
                           Year round weekly practices for fun bowling is held every Thursday 3 - 5 p.m. at Cardinal Lanes

Swimming:         Swim practices will be every Tuesday evening from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the YWCA begins on February 6th
                                  Free Swim: from 7:30 - 8 p.m.              

Power Lifting:    You must pre-register by calling 341-7253        

Softball:                Softball practices are every Tuesday 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the MLK Center on 8th 
                                  Practice begins March 6   
Gymnastics:       Gymnastics practices are held every Monday from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m
                                  Practices begin January 5th at Port City Gymnastics   

Cheerleading:    Cheer practices are held every Thursday at the Northside Church from  5:30-6:30 p.m.
                                   Practices are year-round                    

Volleyball:            Volleyball practice every Wednesday 6-7 p.m. begins March 14th at Williston Middle School
Karate Class:       Karate Classes are held on Fridays  Wilmington New International Karate

Unified Basketball:    Date - TBA, Unified basketball league at UNCW from 6-7:30pm


Sports Banquet:

Free sports banquet for all athletes that participant in the local sports trainings (soccer, bocce, tennis, golf, and basketball).  The sports banquet will be for all registered athletes that went to the summer games and fall games.  The banquet will be held in November.
